Tuleyome Tales: Recovering from Gold Fever — and Fire
Mercury, which occurs naturally in many parts of California’s Coast Range, was mined during three eras in our region: the Gold Rush for recovering gold flakes (late 1800’s), the two world wars for munitions (early- to mid-1900’s), and most recently for products such as hearing…
Council favors short-term ban on leaf blowers

Our homes are more important than ever: they are our offices, schools, entertainment, and, at times, the only sit-down restaurant in town. So, having a home that powers itself, even when there’s a power outage, equates to huge peace of mind. How is this possible?…

Tuleyome Tales: Enjoy some summer hiking in the Berryessa Snow Mountain region
This area gets hot in the summer. Every year, in the extreme heat of summer, there are rescues of hikers in our region. Heat and dehydration can be life-threatening, but rescues, which put our emergency personnel at risk and keep emergency resources occupied, can be avoided with…
Davis Media Access: Being ‘open’ in a time of closure
In my recent interview with the Rev. Beth Banks of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis on the “COVID-19 Community Report,” she said of UUCD, “the buildings are closed, but the church is open.” In a time when our common language is populated with words…

Tuleyome Tales: A hotspot for biodiversity
Biodiversity hotspots are regions where species numbers are unusually high. Most but not all are in the tropics. One that isn’t is the Californian region. In a 2000 Nature Conservancy inventory of state biodiversity, California stood out dramatically. Its 5,653 species of animals and plants…

Tuleyome Tales: Nature is a healing force for PTSD

Cool Davis is hoping all our friends living in Rancho Yolo remain well! This is a reminder of our fragile grid and the need to look after each other during heat emergencies. Hurray that the City of Davis City now has Social Services staff to join City of Davis Fire Department to assist when a vulnerable neighborhood's power goes down.
For other down neighborhoods - remember to check on your neighbors! If your power is still on consider ways to reduce your energy use pre-cool , cover windows, delay appliance use, double up with neighbors in a cool location - cooling center (see City post for cooling center info), movie theater etc to reduce loads. After the emergency, move forward on your plans for how you will reduce and manage energy use in the future. We have to stand together to adapt to new climate challenges. Cool Davis and our many partners are here to help.
