Per Capita Davis: The climate crisis is on the ballot
This column finds its way into the print version of The Davis Enterprise the first and third Wednesday of each month, meaning that it will land in your driveway on Nov. 7, the day after the election. I can’t tell you how many past elections…
Per Capita Davis: One step forward, two steps back
It seems the news on most topics around the globe alternates between scary and hopeful. The Climate Crisis is no exception. I’m not sure if we are on a “one step forward, two steps backwards” trajectory or a “two steps forward, one step backwards” journey….
Regional report: Climate change threats, solutions for Sacramento Valley
Over the next few decades, climate change is expected to make the Sacramento region hotter, drier and increasingly prone to extremes like megadroughts, flooding and large wildfires. This is expected to strain the region’s infrastructure for water and energy transmission, agricultural systems, plants and wildlife,…

The Davis City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an ordinance paving the way for bike share locally and setting up rules and regulations for bike share companies to follow here. Beginning in May, Davis residents will see bright red JUMP bikes parked in locations around…
Car-free Davis: Ride-share bikes are coming soon
Davisites, biking in our region is about to get more exciting! A new electric-assist bike-share system is coming to Davis, Sacramento, and West Sacramento this summer. The purpose of the new system is to enhance mobility, encourage active lifestyles, improve air quality, and provide an…
Per Capita Davis: These companies mean business
Crossposted from the Davis Enterprise From page A9 | November 15, 2017 There’s been an avalanche of news recently about the current discussions in Bonn, Germany, about the climate crisis. Leaders of all of the countries of the world are gathered to follow up on the…
Per Capita Davis: Tour the country for heartening energy-saving news
Crossposted from the Davis Enterprise Still engaged in an internal fight between optimism and pessimism about the climate crisis, I took an online tour around the country to see if We the People are all in on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Examples of what I found…
Per Capita Davis: Batten down the hatches
By John Mott-Smith Crossposted from the Davis Enterprise From page A9 February 01, 2017 The last column was about the “calm before the storm,” one way of looking at what was then the impending change in the office of president of the United States. Way back…
Per Capita Davis: Progress being made under the radar
This article has been reproduced from the Davis Enterprise published March 2, 2016Â By John Mott-Smith The Paris climate talks created enthusiasm and hope that the world is moving away from fossil fuels and toward renewables. The U.S. commitment to this goal leans heavily on…
Per Capita Davis: The battery bonanza
By John Mott-Smith From page A4 | July 16, 2015 Cross posted from the Davis Enterprise | Photo Credit: Davis Enterprise This is the second of three (I think) columns on the topic of energy storage; specifically, electrical energy storage. Why so much time spent…
Per Capita Davis: Solar energy is sizzling in Yolo County
By John Mott-Smith Cross posted from the Davis Enterprise, 2-19-2015 Rooftop solar photovoltaic systems sprouted up on an increasing number of homes throughout Yolo County in 2014. Of course, many, many systems were installed prior to 2004, and it would be interesting to go backwards…
Per Capita Davis: News from the Funny Papers
This column by John Mott-Smith is republished from the Davis Enterprise The last column was somewhat sobering, so I thought I’d start this one out with news from the funny papers. A recent cartoon pictured a factory, labeled “U.N. Climate Summit,” with smokestacks spewing what…
Pacific Coast Action Plan on Climate and Energy
This May, the Governments of California, British Colombia, Oregon, and Washington met in San Francisco to sign the Pacific Coast Action Plan on Climate and Energy for their combined population of 53 million. It acknowledges, “the clear and convincing scientific evidence of climate change, ocean…
Per Capita Davis: Mother Nature and the Red Queen
This article is crossposted from the Davis Enterprise. I’m offering a couple of thoughts for the new year. One involves Mother Nature, and the other Lewis Carroll’s Red Queen. First, Mother Nature. The world’s policymakers sat down in Warsaw in 2013 to talk about climate…
Per capita Davis: Take a look in the mirror
This column by JohnMott-Smith, a member of Cool Davis, is reprinted with thanks to the Davis Enterprise. When we look in the mirror, we see ourselves. Or, more precisely, we see ourselves backwards: my left arm looks like the right arm of the impostor in…
Per Capita Davis: Rising temperatures are concerning
This article, written by John Mott-Smith, a member of Cool Davis is cross-posted from the Davis Enterprise. About a month ago, there was an article in the paper about the high temperatures in March in the United States. Of course, the usual disclaimer is still…
Impolite conversation about climate change

Cool Davis is hoping all our friends living in Rancho Yolo remain well! This is a reminder of our fragile grid and the need to look after each other during heat emergencies. Hurray that the City of Davis City now has Social Services staff to join City of Davis Fire Department to assist when a vulnerable neighborhood's power goes down.
For other down neighborhoods - remember to check on your neighbors! If your power is still on consider ways to reduce your energy use pre-cool , cover windows, delay appliance use, double up with neighbors in a cool location - cooling center (see City post for cooling center info), movie theater etc to reduce loads. After the emergency, move forward on your plans for how you will reduce and manage energy use in the future. We have to stand together to adapt to new climate challenges. Cool Davis and our many partners are here to help.
