Two key bills affecting household access to solar are moving through the legislature.  Organizations and individuals interested in supporting solar rights are encouraged to sign on to support and advocate for two bills promoted by CA Solar Coalition.

AB 2389 — Monday March 30th: Deadline to join coalition letter to Stop the Solar Property Tax

Many California solar owners could face higher property taxes in 2027 if state lawmakers don’t pass AB 2389 this year. A higher property tax could be triggered if someone:
  • Adds a battery to their existing system
  • Adds more solar panels on their roof
  • Install a new rooftop solar system
For 40 years, the state Legislature has ensured that property taxes won’t go up when people install solar or batteries. However, that protection will expire by the end of the year. The Legislature must act now to extend the solar property tax exemption by passing AB 2389 (Irwin). For more info…

SB – 868 — Plug Into the Sun! Balcony Solar bill moves to next steps in the process

The bill to bring Plug-In solar to California (SB 868) passed the Senate Energy Committee on March 17th.
The next two hurdles for SB 868 are the Senate Judiciary and Senate Appropriations committees.  Portable solar panels can now be hung from a balcony, set out on a patio, or placed in your yard, and then safely plugged into a wall outlet just like a toaster. Once plugged in, the solar electricity immediately flows through the home to power your appliances. This new technology is taking off in places like Germany but has yet to truly arrive in the United States. Let’s change that!
