Restaurants in Davis are signing up to serve new, scrumptious, juicy, and mouth-watering plant-based burgers as part of a month-long Burger Battle this March, 2019, competing for awards in multiple categories. Restaurant patrons will rate each burger they taste in patty categories like “Impossible Burger,” “Beyond Burger,” “house-made,” and “portobello,” but restaurants can also win in additional categories like most burgers sold and most views on social media.

COOL Cuisine, a Cool Davis partner, is spearheading the Burger Battle and plans to encourage individuals and tasting teams to eat at local establishments and vote for their favorites. Voting links will be located on the COOL Cuisine website, and QR codes and links will be on table tents in participating restaurants. This high-profile event promises to generate tons of buzz and focus a spotlight on talented chefs at our local eateries. A similar event was hugely successfully in Sacramento this past June.

Not a chef or restaurant owner or manager? Diners can get on board now, too! COOLCuisine is encouraging Davisites to …

  • Go to your favorite restaurants in person and send messages on social media asking if they plan to participate in the battle. Express interest and excitement about the event.
  • Diners who work locally can ask their employer, department, or human resources officer to adopt the battle as a wellness activity (as an introduction to plant-based foods) by encouraging staff to try a few burgers and vote.
  • COOL Cuisine is encouraging local companies to form tasting teams of at least 5 people to taste at least 4 burgers and design an award in the company or department name. COOL Cuisine will put the company logo on a display poster awarded to the restaurant.
  • Local firms and organizations can also plan to order plant-based burgers for catered events from participating restaurants during the month of March and have staff vote (review) each burger they try.
  • Diners should go out, bring lots of friends, and vote in MARCH!

Diners can like and share information on social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Diners who vote will be part of drawings for prizes, such as T-shirts. Top burger award winners will be featured with their burgers in a professional video to be posted on the COOL Cuisine website and social media and made available to all participating restaurants. All winners will receive a frameable award poster. COOL Cuisine also plans to coordinate mini burger battles or blind taste tests between competing chefs on local television, news, and social media throughout the month of March.

Restaurants interested in participation can register for the Burger Battle at where there is a sign-up form, donation link, and helpful resource materials on the Burger Battle page. Chefs and plant-based eaters alike will gobble up the convenient inventory list of vegan burger-associated products available at two local retail outlets posted on the COOL Cuisine website.

Restaurants that sign up by January 15 have the opportunity to be included in a promotional video as well as posters and table top displays. The last day for restaurants to sign up to participate in the Burger Battle is February 1.

As part of the preparations, the Davis Food Co-op is offering a free product sampling event exclusively for participating Burger Battle chefs on January 23 from 9am to 11am at the Teaching Kitchen at the Davis Food Co-op, 537 G Street, Davis (kitty corner from the store). Chefs will taste food products and see how plant-based burgers fry and vegan cheese melts, all to cook up ideas for designing their own creative burgers.
