Extreme Heat in Yolo County: Stay Safe and Build Resilience in 2026
Extreme heat is becoming more common in Yolo County, bringing higher health risks, increased energy demand, and a greater chance of power outages. Taking a few simple steps now can help you and your family stay safe during hot weather.
Stay Informed
- Sign up for Yolo Alert to receive emergency notifications about extreme heat, wildfires, power outages, and other hazards.
- Know your emergency zone. Use the Genasys Protect website to find your zone by entering your address. This can help you stay informed during emergencies.
- Identify nearby cooling locations where you can escape the heat – use the Yolo Places to Cool Down map to find locations near you.
Be Ready for Power Outages
Extreme heat can strain the electrical grid and increase the risk of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) or other outages.
If you rely on powered medical equipment:
- Charge devices and backup batteries in advance
- Keep emergency supplies on hand
- Enroll in your utility’s Medical Baseline Program if eligible
- Monitor utility alerts and outage updates
Save Energy During Heat Waves
Reducing electricity use during peak hours helps support grid reliability and can lower your energy bill.
Try:
- Running appliances early in the morning or later in the evening
- Line-drying clothes
- Using LED lighting
- Keeping blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day
Know the Signs of Heat Illness
