The United Methodist Church of Davis celebrated Earth Day 2012 by consecrating their new solar panels and renewing their dedication to caring for God’s creation.  During the sermon, Pastor Kelly Love emphasized the “Christian responsibility for wise stewardship of our environment,” and she recognized the many steps taken thus far toward this goal.

In addition to installing a solar power system, the church, in recent years, has replaced all light bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs; repaired and reset all thermostats to energy-saving levels; weather stripped all doors and windows; converted from paper to electronic communications; converted from disposable to washable plates, cups, and utensils; created an organic garden; participated in 6 Low Carbon Diet groups; and participated in California Interfaith Power & Light, Cool Davis Initiative, and Cool California Challenge.

United Methodist Church has been given tentative approval for certification as a “greening congregation” by Earth Ministry of Seattle.  They feel that their most important contribution has been the efforts at the church have help to educate and inspire members of the congregation to take similar actions at home.
