How Yolo Commute Is Helping Yolo County Hit Its Climate Goals

If we’re serious about cutting local greenhouse gas emissions, we need to rethink how we get around. In Davis, on-road transportation accounts for nearly three-quarters of all emissions, while across Yolo County, it makes up about half of our carbon footprint. Despite improvements in fuel efficiency, the number of miles we drive keeps climbing — making it clear that getting out of our cars is essential. That’s why Yolo Commute’s commuter rewards program and the NorCal GO app are game changers, offering real incentives and tools to help you choose cleaner, greener ways to get to work — and help our community meet its ambitious climate goals.

About Yolo Commute

Yolo Commute is a nonprofit partnership of public and private employers united to reduce single-occupant car trips throughout Yolo County. Their mission is to create a balanced, multimodal transportation system — one that offers reliable options including transit, biking, walking, carpooling, and telecommuting to residents and businesses alike.

With regional population and job growth expected to strain the current roadways by 2035, expanding roads isn’t a viable solution due to air quality and infrastructure limits. Instead, Yolo Commute focuses on Transportation Demand Management (TDM) — strategies that encourage alternatives to driving alone, helping to reduce congestion and emissions.

Currently, nearly 92% of peak-hour trips in the region are made by solo drivers, with only a small fraction using carpools, public transit, biking, or walking. Yolo Commute aims to shift these patterns by educating and incentivizing sustainable travel choices throughout the community.

Getting involved with Yolo Commute is one of the most impactful ways you can help reduce emissions and improve air quality locally.  Sign up for text alerts, join the Commuter Rewards program, and start making your commute work for you — and the planet.
