May 21st marked the first Bike to the Movie Event in Davis, celebrating students across Davis, from Patwin Elementary and North Davis Elementary School.

Eighty participating students marked a historic milestone, demonstrating to the community how active transportation and community involvement transform Davis into a more enjoyable and efficient space. Drivers made way for these thoughtful community leaders, students, family, and volunteers alike, while observing the small curbside space that accommodated so many colorful bikes, allowing more participation in the wonderful Davis downtown shops, and especially its cherished Varsity Theatre

The students’ big steps toward independence were rewarded with Varsity Theatre’s showing of Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro. Students may have celebrated the movie’s fantastical plot while also reflecting their own contributions as kind, environmental achievers in their own neighborhood. Among the cyclists was Davis mayor, Bapu Vaitla, who enjoyed the future-forward conversation sprung by the bright students.

The event, sponsored by Bike Davis, is one of many educational opportunities made possible by the local nonprofit. Aims for future events joining all DJUSD elementary schools, among other community members are made possible by your support! Check out Bike Davis here to learn how you can help contribute to a stronger, healthier, bike-loving community!
