Wolk Speaks Out to Defend Solar for Renters, Schools, and Farms
From SolarRights.org: Save Solar for Renters, Schools, and Farmers: Over the past month, state legislators have released two letters opposing the CPUC’s proposal to gut rooftop solar for multifamily homes, schools and farms. The letter is on the heels of significant opposition from affordable housing developers, tenants rights advocates, school districts and farmers. That, plus growing media attention from including CalMatters, LA Times, local TV and radio, and op/eds by former legislator Lois Wolk and Pasadena school board member Tina Fredericks. The CPUC is expected to decide on November 2nd.
Here’s two actions you can take to keep the pressure up:
- Call the Governor: Gov. Newsom appointed the CPUC Commissioners. His phone number is (916) 445-2841. His lines are open weekdays.
- Call your Assemblymember and Senator. We think legislators are starting to realize the scale of this threat to their constituents. Let’s keep waking them up. If you have 1 more minute, please also call your state legislators using this Look up your legislators here.
Here’s a sample script for both calls:
“My name is ____. I live in _________. I am calling to demand that __________ does everything in their power to stop the CPUC’s proposal to block rooftop solar in multifamily housing, schools, and farms. The proposal must be changed to allow everyone to use their solar power without utility interference, with no exceptions whatsoever. Thank you.”
Excerpt from Lois Wolk’s Septemer 30, 2023, editorial in the Davis Enterprise on the topic:
“As a legislator, I worked hard to bring the benefits of solar to consumers previously left out of the clean energy revolution. If the CPUC approves what has been proposed, refusing to allow the solar electricity generated on-site to be used on-site, it would render these programs useless and cripple a large group of consumers’ ability to access solar. California would strip people in apartments and multiple-meter situations of the basic rights to solar granted to consumers in single family homes. “
