Community Mercantile Grand Opening: Shop Here First
Following their successful soft opening on September 11th, Community Mercantile, the self-proclaimed ‘reuse hub,’ welcomed another crowd of anxious supporters and buyers to their grand opening celebration on Sunday October 30th at at 622 Cantrill Drive, Davis. An estimated 200-plus eager shoppers came to fulfill their interest in this new age version of a thrift store.
From their warehouse filled with a wide array of goods, founders Stephanie Koop and Larry Fisher welcomed all who attended to, as their motto puts it, “Shop here first and save the planet!” While treated to cake and other refreshments, the enthusiastic assembly was also melodically buoyed by the musical talents of David Abramson.
Stephanie and Larry have an abiding passion for ecological causes. As our home planet groans under the weight of mass consumerism, these dedicated activists have taken a bold and significant step forward in lessening our carbon footprint by forming Community Mercantile. This non-profit venture focuses on keeping a wide variety of valuable, usable products in circulation for as long as possible, and out of the landfill.
It’s easy to see why their motto is, Shop Here First and Save the Planet!
Store hours are now:
Wednesday – Friday 3-6pm
Saturday 2-6pm
Sunday 11am-3pm
Delivery in Davis is available!
In an ongoing quest to reduce our carbon footprint, Community Mercantile will also hold classes in reuse, repair, and up-use; reaching out to the community to assist in their cause. Those with inquiries or a desire to volunteer are always welcome to visit their website at www.communitymercdavis.org or send an email to admin@communitymercdavis.

Cool Davis is hoping all our friends living in Rancho Yolo remain well! This is a reminder of our fragile grid and the need to look after each other during heat emergencies. Hurray that the City of Davis City now has Social Services staff to join City of Davis Fire Department to assist when a vulnerable neighborhood's power goes down.
For other down neighborhoods - remember to check on your neighbors! If your power is still on consider ways to reduce your energy use pre-cool , cover windows, delay appliance use, double up with neighbors in a cool location - cooling center (see City post for cooling center info), movie theater etc to reduce loads. After the emergency, move forward on your plans for how you will reduce and manage energy use in the future. We have to stand together to adapt to new climate challenges. Cool Davis and our many partners are here to help.
