Next YCEC Meeting January 10, 2:00 pm – NEW once a month meeting format

Items up for discussion at the next Yolo Climate Emergency Meeting on January 10th:

Updates from a Yolo County Climate Action Commissioner

Commissioner to be determined from the 2021-formed 9-person commission will be in attendance. NJ Mvondo is the Chair of the commission and Andrew Truman Kim is the co-Chair. Congratulations to the entire Commission as a new county level deliberative and policy recommending body responsible for revising and expanding the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan for Yolo County to meet 2030 goals.

Update on the Teichert Mining Project in Yolo County

Background and a chance to sign on….The Yolo Board of Supervisors meeting is on Tuesday, January 11. We have 128 signatures on a petition to “press pause” and need to reach at least 100 signatures more before the week of January 3 when some of us are meeting with Yolo County Supervisors. We need your support.  Would you kindly email this petition to your Yolo friends and if possible, post it on FACEBOOK and your social media too? Here is the link you need to have signatures added virtually on the petition. If everyone can help get 5-10 more supporters, we can reach our goal easily. https://chng.it/fJWfym9Gx6
Update: The Yolo County Planning Commission Teichert Expansion Mining Project vote rednered a favorable decision December 9: “The commission voted 4-2 to significantly downsize the proposed 319 acre project to 67 acres, citing loss of prime, historic farmland; groundwater impacts; methyl mercury formation in the anaerobic deep wet pits leading to mercury bioaccumulation; air quality and unhealthy, 50% increase in diesel truck traffic over the life of the 30-year project, etc.”
See Juliette Beck’s article in the Davis Vanguard.  Cache Creek at a Crossroads.
GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT: if you would like to share your opinion as to whether or not your Yolo County Board of Supervisors should deny or approve of the Teichert Shifler Mining request (Teichert is the applicant) please provide written comment by Monday 1/4/2022 noon or provide comment at the public Board of Supervisors Meeting set for January 11.

Update on the Comida Digna food sovereignty project

A big thank you to Yolo Farm to Fork for their partnership and leadership taking the Comida Digna proposal to the next level! The Yolo Farm to Fork leadership team has been very busy working on the latest proposal which combines the two original proposals/narratives (YCEC’s Comida Digna Version 1.0 and Yolo Farm to Fork’s Nourish Our Children Proposal) into a joint proposal, which is moving forward as Comida Digna :) They have also secured two additional community partners: TANA (The Taller Arte Del Nuevo Amanecer) and La Tourangelle Foundation, both very inspirational orgs based out of Woodland. This Comida Digna proposal draft is truly next level when it comes to details, including specific timelines/calendars, budget-line items and site-specific strategies.
We plan to continue to respectfully let county staff/leadership know that there is broad coalition that has formed for the past 11 months around our program mission to improve the accessibility of fresh, locally grown foods, and the nutrition of children and their families living in poverty in Yolo County.

You can voice your support for the Comida Digna/Yolo Farms to Forks project to receive American Rescue Plan funding allocation at the same Yolo County Board meeting – at public comment – find out more.

Update on the Health and Community Center. Work in progress on providing the county’s first micro-grid resilient power system for a Health and Community Center for the Esparto community.

Update on the Cache Creek Nature Preserve and community pressure to re-direct that preserve’s board to allow indigenous led restoration of the preserve and surrounding watershed.

Kim Stanley Robinson to speak
