Apartment Move-out Waste Reduction Program
Are you interested in helping out with the award-winning Davis Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program? Then mark your calendars for August 25-September 1!
Every year the City of Davis Recycling Program teams up with apartment managers to encourage reuse of items and to reduce the amount of waste that happens during the yearly August move-out.
Davis Recycling staff sets up donation stations at participating apartment properties and residents donate items they no longer want or need. Local non-profit groups and other apartment residents stop by and take the items they want. The end result is that good, usable items are kept out of the trash.
This year, the Apartment Move-Out Waste Reduction Program (AMOWRP) will run from August 25- September 1.
During that time, volunteers are needed to work whatever hours they can (morning, afternoon or evening) to help keep the donation stations organized (place cushions on sofas, stack books neatly, throw trash in the garbage, tidy-up the area, etc.), and sort materials (separate clothes, linens, shoes, house wares, etc.).
Volunteers are invited to keep any items they wish that have been donated. The City Recycling Program will also be pairing up interested volunteers with local non-profit groups; participating non-profits will provide a list of the items they are in need of, and volunteers can pick them up as they find them.
Are you interested in volunteering? If so, follow the instructions below from Jennifer Gilbert, City of Davis Conservation Coordinator, or go directly to the City of Davis AMOWRP web page.
All required forms MUST be completed and returned to Jennifer Gilbert (JGilbert@CityofDavis.org) BEFORE volunteers begin work.
Step 1: Attend a training meeting
All AMOWRP volunteers are required to attend a training meeting. Training meetings for volunteers are listed below. If you would like to invite a friend to work with you, OR if you aren’t able to attend an AMOWRP volunteer training meeting but would still like to volunteer, you will need to complete and return the AMOWRP Volunteer Training Acknowledgement.
- Thursday, July 28 at 1:00 pm in the City Hall Conference Room, 23 Russell Blvd.
- Tuesday, August 2 at 6:30 pm at the Davis Senior Center Game Room, 646 A St.
- Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 pm at the Davis Senior Center Game Room, 646 A St.
Step 2: Complete the required forms
- Volunteer Sign-In Form
- Driving Forms: Volunteers with a valid CA Driver’s License that will be driving while working as a volunteer for the move-out program (not driving to an apartment donation station to begin work, but driving from one apartment to another in the course of working), are considered “employees that are driving for the City” and are required to complete these forms as well:
All required forms MUST be completed and returned to Jennifer Gilbert (JGilbert@CityofDavis.org) BEFORE volunteers begin work.
Step 3: Choose 1 or 2 areas to work in
Look at the route map and choose 1 or 2 routes, A-H that you would like to work in.
Step 4: Choose days and times to work
The AMOWRP starts on August 25 and runs through September 1. Volunteers are needed the most on Aug 27-31. You can choose a general time frame:
- Morning (6-11am)
- Noon (11-1pm)
- Afternoon (1-5pm)
- Evening (5-9pm)
Please note: As required by Cal OSHA, since it will be hot, volunteers will be required to either: 1) work with at least one other person, or 2) Check in with your supervisor (Jennifer Gilbert) every hour.
See the City of Davis AMOWRP web page for additional steps.
We hope that you will participate in the AMOWRP this year! It’s a very rewarding program that makes a difference in our community, is good for the environment and is a lot of fun–like a city-wide garage sale, but everything is free! Please join us this year as we save resources, prevent waste, and put unwanted items into the hands of people that need them.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about the program.
Thank you!

"Donofrio says Lime will have workers in Davis and says they will be “moving those bikes within 90 minutes, but also being proactive."
The city’s pilot project could include 500 e-bikes and 300-e-scooters — the prospect of which did not necessarily sit well with all council members."

Davis votes to bring back electric bikes and scooters after banning during pandemic
www.capradio.org
UC Davis still needs to approve them on-campus after City Council voted to pave the way for a pilot program that would bring rental e-bikes and e-scooters back this fall.It would be fine if people used them responsibly. But Jump bikes were left around randomly and I dread the scooters being used by adolescents.
