Cutting down dead black walnuts along Russel Blvd.

All who love trees are invited to a special memorial service scheduled on September 22, the first day of Fall. As service organizer, Judy Moores, notes, “It is appropriate to gather on the Autumnal Equinox to honor the Black Walnut trees that once flourished along Russell Boulevard, just west of the city-line. Trees, like the seasons, have their fullness and their passing.”

Plans for the service include a brief history of the Russell trees, time to mourn their passing and time to celebrate the contribution of all trees to our lives. Those who live in the area will share plans for replanting trees on Russell. Meri Superak will play her Native American Flute. Eldridge Moores and Barbara Meixner will mourn the trees with Gabriel Faure’s Elegie for cello and piano.Sonja Brodt will celebrate trees and nature with a dance, “Sweet and Low.” Meri Superak, who composed the song for voice and guitar, will accompany Sonja.

The event, sponsored by the Green Sanctuary Committee of the UU Church of Davis and Tree Davis, is scheduled from 7-8pm, on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at the UU Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road, Davis. Doors will open at 6:40pm. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

While the event is free and open to the public, donations to Tree Davis to cover the costs of replanting will be welcome. Those who come are encouraged to walk or bike if at all possible. Donations for new trees will be accepted by Tree Davis as the county has no funds budgeted for their replacement. The Green Sanctuary Committee and Tree Davis are both Cool Davis Partners.
