Veggie Bag Project

Wanted! Davis’s latest eco-accessory: the veggie bag!

While the City has banned 2-mil plastic bags, this is only part of the solution we need.  The goal of veggie bag project is to gradually replace and eliminate plastic bags in the produce and bulk aisles of grocery stores by making washable, reusable cloth bags.  They are fast becoming the must-have item in Davis!

Veggie Bags are hand-made bags sewn from brightly colored, soft cotton fabric. Each bag is large enough to hold a bunch of beets or carrots topped with greens or a head of lettuce when the drawstring is pulled. The bags are quick to cut out, iron and sew which is fortunate because everyone needs lots of them. >Download poster advertising bags

Look for “Try Veggie Bag” signs in grocery produce and bulk aisles as gentle reminders to bring your own cloth bags.  It’s all about making new habits! This project is recruiting volunteers across Davis to sew veggie bags to give away at the Farmers Market, the Davis Food Coop, and various Cool Davis events. Each bag with directions inside reminds the recipients to make enough bags to shed the plastic bag habit in the produce and bulk aisles. Cool Davis is always looking for volunteers. >Download poster advertising for veggie bag sewers
