Earth's Warmest Year in 3-Year Streak

The globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for 2016 was the highest among all years since record keeping began in 1880. During the final month, the December combined global land and ocean average surface temperature was the third highest for December in the 137-year record.

Quest to Save the Polar Bears

Hey kids, want to save a polar bear? Tell your parents to leave the car at home and walk or bike to school next month instead.

All Davis school children will be able to participate in the Polar Pedal throughout February. For every trip to school made on foot or bicycle, kids will earn a point. Every 500 points equals a polar bear, and the goal is for the Davis Joint Unified School District to save 20 polar bears through Polar Bear International.

Davis residents push for environmental protections

On Sunday, January 8, more than 150 residents gathered to discuss how to protect environmental gains from a feared assault by Donald Trump's administration, filling the wooden pews at Davis Community Church.

"It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor . . . [climate change] is a global challenge, which requires global solidatity," said Itzel Morales, a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at UC Davis.

Dakota Access Pipeline: Environmental Impact Statement Letters

The Standing Rock Sioux continue their fight to keep their sacred land intact and their water safe from oil spills. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting an Environmental Impact Statement process set in motion by President Obama, which is open for public input until February 20. Steve Hampton has prepared some helpful guidance on preparing a comment letter. He advises the public to submit a letter because this process will have legal meaning.

They now face serious charges, up to decades in prison. The first trial began Jan 31 for Ken Ward in Washington.
