City of Davis Recommits on Earth Day 2018
Editor’s Note: Cool Davis appreciates the dedication of staff and council and wishes to continue to cultivate our partnership as we work towards our shared goals. We also look forward to working with new staff and council as we move through transitions of roles, personnel, and officials. We must all dedicate ourselves to addressing the challenges that climate change poses to our community.
We commit to protect and enhance the long-term health of the natural environment, community and economy by: Forging local and regional partnerships with UC Davis, Cool Davis, local organizations, environmental professionals, businesses and citizens to accelerate the adoption of community wide sustainability practices and raise community awareness.
[CITY OF DAVIS] PROCLAMATION
RECOGNIZING APRIL 22, 2018 AS EARTH DAY
WHEREAS, Earth Day is celebrated annually to recommit to the goals of a healthy environment and a peaceful, just and sustainable world; and
WHEREAS, the City of Davis and our citizens, organizations, and businesses have shown dedicated leadership on environmental issues, and we acknowledge our collective responsibility for environmental education, stewardship and community sustainability; and
WHEREAS, local communities can be the drivers of building a healthy society by addressing issues such as energy production and use, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, transportation, water conservation, farmland, urban forest and habitat protection, waste prevention, environmental equity; and
WHEREAS, the City of Davis, City of Woodland and unincorporated Yolo County will launch our locally governed electricity provider, Valley Clean Energy, in June 2018, to bring cleaner energy at competitive rates, give residents and businesses a choice in how much of our electricity comes from clean energy sources and reinvest earnings back into our community by creating local green energy programs and projects; and
WHEREAS, the City is committed to addressing regional climate resiliency and adaptation issues through leadership and participation in the ad hoc Yolo Resiliency Planning group, the Yolo Climate Compact and the Capital Region Climate Readiness Collaborative; and
WHEREAS, we acknowledge that, to meet the goals of Earth Day to raise awareness, trigger positive action to protect our environment, and help guide local decision-making, the City Council will provide leadership, employ the expertise and talent of our community, and engage the hearts and minds of our citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Davis City Council, on behalf of the citizens of Davis, do hereby proclaim that the City of Davis recognizes April 22, 2018 as Earth Day. We commit to protect and enhance the long-term health of the natural environment, community and economy by:
- Demonstrating leadership through participation in local Earth Day activities.
- Increasing local renewable energy opportunities and implementing energy conservation.
- Inviting and encouraging all citizens, businesses, organizations, schools, congregations,
neighborhoods and families to engage in environmentally sound practices every day. - Forging local and regional partnerships with UC Davis, Cool Davis, local organizations, environmental professionals, businesses and citizens to accelerate the adoption of community wide sustainability practices and raise community awareness.
- Using the observance of Earth Day as an opportunity to re-energize the innovative spirit of
Davis and challenge the community to explore new paths to sustainability.
