Local businesses can play a positive role in the fight against climate change
Local businesses have been essential partners in Cool Davis since its inception. Along with supporting Cool Davis financially and organizationally, local businesses have also pioneered sustainability initiatives.
One such project is the Davis Commercial Food Scrap Collection Project, initiated by Shar Katz, owner of Cafe Italia, and launched by the City of Davis Recycling Program and Davis Waste Removal (DWR). The program provides participating businesses with 65 gallon carts to fill with the food scraps they generate and diverts significant waste from landfills. A pilot program is up and running through until December 2011.
Food scraps buried in a landfill produce large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas, which is now thought to be 70 times more potent by volume than carbon dioxide.
Cool Davis also works with the business network, Partner for a Greener Davis, which requires local businesses to Implement a variety of measures to save energy, water, and other materials, and reduce waste.Gold, silver or bronze certification status is awarded to each Green Business Partner based on the number of actions they take to reduce their environmental impact.
