Students at Cool Davis Initiative Rally in 2009

Students have been at the heart of Cool Davis since it was launched, promoting the campaign within the university and pioneering many sustainability initiatives that the city has taken up.

In  2011, under the umbrella Make Davis Cool students, organized an apartment canvas day visiting over 500 apartment units to raise awareness of Earth Week events on campus and to provide resources to get involved.Students have also been working with the UCD Greek Community to create the Green Greek Initiative. This initiative seeks to reduce the consumption in Greek homes, promote zero waste events, and establish sustainability coordinators for every chapter.

In Fall and Winter Quarter of 2010/2011, Make Davis Cool members created one of UC Davis’s first student run and led classes. The “Field Guide to Sustainable Living in Davis” enrolled close to 50 students in learning about living sustainably in Davis. The students heard from guest lecturers, planted herbs, fixed bike tires, and took field trips throughout the city.

In 2013, UC Davis students launched Fossil Free UC Davis to put pressure on the university to divest from fossil fuels.
