Students have been at the heart of Cool Davis since it was launched, promoting the campaign within the university and pioneering many sustainability initiatives that the city has taken up.
In Earth Week 2011, students under the umbrella Make Davis Cool organized an apartment canvass day where students canvassed over 500 apartment units: raising awareness of Earth Week events on the campus as well as resources to get involved.Students also been working with the UCD Greek Community to create the Green Greek Initiative. This initiative seeks to reduce the consumption of Greek homes, promote zero waste events, and establish sustainability coordinators in every chapter.
In Fall and Winter Quarter of 2010/2011, Make Davis Cool members created one of UC Davis’ first student run and student led classes. The Field Guide to Sustainable Living in Davis taught close to 50 students about living sustainably in Davis. The students heard from guest lecturers, planted herbs, fixed bike tires, and took field trips throughout the city of Davis.
In 2013, UC Davis students also launched Fossil Free UC Davis that is putting pressure on University of California Davis to divest from fossil fuels.
