On Earth Day, April 22, Cool Davis was very proud to honor members of our community for their efforts to reduce our city’s emissions and to model a low carbon green liveable future. Here are some photos of the awardees and the ceremony held in the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.

A proud group of Parkview Place residents, including gayle yamada, Jerry Schimke, Kay Schimke, David Hosley, Carol Bourne and Dick Bourne pose with their new Cool Davis Climate Solution Award. Cool Davis recognized Parkview Place for incorporating a creative combination of heating, cooling, and hot water systems that easily exceeded the goal of net-zero performance in its first year. In addition Parkview also deserves the award for its accomplishments in the areas of transportation, water conservation, sustainability, and innovation in senior living.

Lew Fulton of the UC Davis Transportation Institute graciously accepts a 2015 Eco-hero award on behalf of Dan Sperling who was out of town on Earth Day. Cool Davis honored Professor Sperling for his efforts to build strong partnerships among groups working on transportation, integrate research and education programs, and connect research with public outreach and education. Through his work, he is leading the way locally, nationally and internationally toward an environmentally sustainable transportation technology.

Cool Davis honored Kiayue for his development of a solar energy model, simulates solar irradiance received by solar panels installed on roofs, and allows users to learn the optimal tilt angle for solar panels, wherever they are on earth, by typing in the local latitude. or Dan Wolk congratulates Davis High School junior, Kaiyue “David” Wang. , while Councilman Robb Davis holds David’s Cool Davis Eco-Hero award. Kaiyue’s award includes a framed picture of the Earth and Moon with a citation about his work and a certificate of recognition from both Senator Lois Wolk and Assemblyman Bill Dodd.

John Mott-Smith, flanked by Mayor Dan Wolk and Councilman Robb Davis, holds his Cool Davis Eco-hero award. Cool Davis honored John for his work in both energy efficiency and his out-standing public service. John’s Davis Enterprise column, focuses on what individuals and municipalities can do to address climate change, and provides us with new ideas. His work as Yolo County’s Climate Change Advisor and Yolo Energy Watch’s Leader has helped cities quantify their energy usage and identify ways to reduce it. As John is also a founder of Cool Davis and a former board member, Cool Davis was especially pleased to name John a 2015 Eco-hero.

Cool Davis honored Orhan for removing his front lawn, planting fruit trees and vegetables, installing permaculture “hugelkultur” mounds that replenish the soil with nutrients, and then producing 600+ pounds of fruit and vegetables yearly as part of his efforts for FARM Davis, a group that grows food for food-insecure people in Davis.

Cool Davis honored Transportation Services’ program for its “goClub,” which provides incentives and support to students and employees who choose to commute by bike, foot, bus, train, or carpool rather than use a single-occupant vehicle. With over 4,000 members in the goClub, Transportation Services has made UC Davis a national leader in the effort to cut carbon emissions.

Hailey was recognized as an outstanding team volunteer and teachers, Keri Hawkins and Martha Quenon were honored for their leadership. Additional Green Team members Mengxuan Zhany, Louisa Chan, and JuHye Mun joined the stage party.
